Meet the Coordinators

Rod Morrison – Street Pastors Coordinator

Originally from Hull, I have lived in Doncaster for 25 years now. My wife is also a Street Pastor and we have two grown up children – a daughter who is a social worker and a son who is a civil engineer – and two young grandchildren. They all live away from Doncaster.

My church is Hall Gate United Reformed Church, in the centre of Doncaster. I am an ordained elder of the United Reformed Church and a nationally accredited lay preacher. In addition I represent the United Reformed Church as its Ecumenical Officer in South Yorkshire, and serve the denomination nationally on the Assembly’s Assessment Board, which accredits candidates for training for ministry.

When I retired from a teaching career in secondary schools and FE some six years ago, I sought some way of witnessing to my faith in my daily life, and to taking that witness out into the community. So I joined the Multi-Faith Chaplaincy Team at Doncaster College, where I continue to serve today.

But I was also challenged by the community around our church in the centre of Doncaster, which includes the very many people who come into town at week-ends to enjoy the night life of the numerous pubs and clubs that surround our building – and how we might show God’s love for them. So along with a committed group of fellow Christians from other churches in Doncaster we set up Doncaster Street Pastors – and the rest, as they say, is history.

As Street Pastors we don’t go out to preach. We don’t go out to ‘save souls’. We go out to show God’s love by service – helping people, especially those who may be vulnerable, to stay safe and enjoy themselves. And sometimes we might talk about God, or faith, or the big questions in life – but only when others bring the subject up.

So if you want to share God’s love with people in a practical, hands-on way, get in touch with me about volunteering as a Street Pastor.

Kerry Baiden – Prayer Pastors Coordinator

My name is Kerry and I’m a member of Hall Gate and Intake United Reformed Churches in Doncaster. I am originally from Sheffield, but have lived in Doncaster for 4 years now. Until recently, my day job was teaching Languages at Danum School, but after the birth of my daughter, I decided to do things differently. I now do a mixture of tutoring and translation work to keep me busy, in between being a mum and a Street Pastor.

I’m the Prayer Pastor co-ordinator for Doncaster, but I was also commissioned as a Street Pastor last December when we started out. I love being a Street Pastor! It’s a crazy, fun blessing and I enjoy it every time we go out. It always amazes me how God directs us to the people who need us – whether practically or for a chat about deeper things. I’ve learned so much about the power of prayer and pray all the time that God’s awesome name is glorified in our town. If you love to pray and have a heart for the fantastic town of Donny, please get in touch about volunteering as a Prayer Pastor or if you would like to receive a prayer newsletter.
